I realised I didn’t have the time or inclination to approach producers, enter competitions, endlessly try and contact agents, so as a creative type I devised a cunning plan; a new medium — an automated voice reading with no traditional dramatic elements, offering a unique, immersive experience, emphasizing creativity and the democracy of the internet. Many people these days understand the language of film – and it crosses over into many cultures and creeds. Stage direction, character cues, the audience get it, it doesn’t have to be a trip to the cinema or staring at the goggle box, they can imagine the film in the biggest cinema available, inside their own heads. In the Australian system, and possibly others I am unaware of, a production company must present a writer's work to a television agency such as ABC, ABC Children’s TV, or SBS, rather than the writer themselves. While this is slowly changing by degrees, writers still often need to become producers to fully realise their creative vision and ensure their projects get made. It is increasingly the only way forward: you must become a producer of your own work.
There are many examples of respected and highly successful writers who have done this, such as J.K. Rowling (Fantastic Beasts and Strike), Vince Gilligan (creator and producer of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul), George R.R. Martin (executive producer of HBO’s Game of Thrones), and Margaret Atwood (actively involved as a consulting producer for The Handmaid’s Tale).
